Hello,  Anyone who has been here before knows that I am all about controlling your chaos,  organizing your life and corralling your clutter.  Clutter is a time thief.  If you can’t find what you need you spend valuable time searching.  You look under the bed, in the car or between the couch cushions.  Sometimes you give up and buy a new whatever was lost.  That is a budget buster.  You know you bought the funniest birthday card for your sister months ago now her birthday is in a week and you can’t find it.What do you do?  You know what you are going to do.  You buy a new card.  Then the week after her birthday you find the first one.  But you can’t send it to anyone else because it says To my Sister for her 30th Birthday…. ARGH!!

You know you need to put some order in your life.  But you are overwhelmed?  Where to start?  I am here to help.  You can look back at some of my prior posts to give you an idea.

It does not matter where you start.  The first step is to begin.   The thing that you lose all the time is a good place to start.  If that is keys.  Determine a set place for them.  Put them there every single time.  Without fail.

If it is that your kids can’t seem to get their school stuff together in the morning before school.  You have a nightmarish morning trying to like trying to herd cats.    Set up a system.  Backpacks in a designated spot, homework checked before they go to bed, determine what everyone is wearing the night before and you will eliminate much of the morning chaos.  You might actually enjoy breakfast with your kids.wp-1474664786272.jpg

Maybe you plan on making dinner but what to make?  What do you have?  What do you need?  Organize your pantry.  That way you will know what you have and if you keep a running shopping list you will not run out of ketchup, butter or sugar.  When you open the last of something put it on the shopping list.  If you keep this list on your cell phone it will always be with you.  You can then make a plan the night before as to what you are making for dinner. You will know what you have and what you need to get.

You can get organized.  I am here to help you bring order to your life.  Where do you find are your biggest clutter areas?  What do you frequently lose?

Thanks, Pamela!

To re-gift or not to re-gift?

That is the question.

Did you know that National Re-gifting Day is December 22?

christmas-tags-1ujxuwqlfo8-ben-white

Look most of the time gifts are perfect. But occasionally there are those that just don’t hit the mark. Maybe you got a candle that you are highly allergic to the scent or could it be that the scent reminds you of something you would rather forget and you just don’t like the scent? What to do? Keep, donate or sell? Tis the season for giving, so would you re-gift it?   Did you already re-gift it to your neighbor, child’s teacher or the babysitter? Are you sure you didn’t get that from the babysitter?

candles-fhptqzgpbx8-joanna-kosinska

OK I am all for re-gifting. But there are some rules:

rules-scrabble-tiles

Rule #1 –        Do not re-gift to the person who give it to you.

Rule #2 –        Do not re-gift to someone who would know who that gift actually came from.

Rule #3 –        Make sure you remove the card or gift tag from inside the box.

Rule #4 –       Don’t keep stuff you don’t like just because someone gave it to you.

Rule #5 –        Don’t keep stuff you can’t use just because someone gave it to you.

Rule #6           Don’t keep stuff you will not use just because someone gave it to you.

Clutter can sneak up on us. Clutter can come in many ways. From the sale of holiday decor or plastic forks unless you need holiday décor or are planning a large casual party you don’t need to buy it just because it is on sale. “Don’t need”= equals clutter.

Clutter overwhelms and can grow. The best thing to do is keep it in control by limiting the space you allocate for any specific thing. Also, a key to being organized is to have a place for everything and you will be able to have everything in its place.

So have you re-gifted a gift? Why? Did the recipient enjoy it?

Thanks Pamela

National Cat Herders Day 12/15

herding-cats-3593274951_0537ffa90c_bToday is National Cat Herders Day.  I know you are thinking how exactly does this fit in with being organized?

Let me tell you. Some of you feel like getting or staying organized is like herding cats am I right?  See, you knew I would get there.

Besides who doesn’t love a picture of cute kittens.

kitten-iyqc9xwmvw4-freddie-marriage

OK today is the day you herd your cats.   You can get organized and you can get control over your clutter.  Here are a few tips:

  • Stacking things develops bad habits. Stacks of items tend to grow into unmanageable piles of clutter and chaos that then take hours to clean and sort.  Looking a stacks or piles of stuff is stressful. It is a constant reminder that there is something to be done  ~ don’t be a Pilot! No Piles allowed.
  • Let go of what you don’t use or can’t wear.  Absolutely do not pay storage fees to store stuff you don’t use, can’t use and will not use.  Someday is most likely not going to come. If it does you can buy what ever you need and enjoy all the space in the mean time.
  • Kids need chores ~  Make chore  lists for children. If they know what is expected of them they can check that off of their lists too. Make them a chore list.
  • Delegate some of the responsibility. I know your kids may not load the dishwasher the way you would but it’s OK. The dishes will get clean. Also so what if your husband doesn’t fold the towels the way you would. They will still dry you off.
  • Don’t assume. Have clear expectations and responsibilities
  • Don’t put things down put them up. The next time you are piling things up, stop and ask yourself how much longer it would take to put things away. It may take a couple extra minutes now, but will save you even more time and effort in the future.
  • It’s OK to say NO. You don’t have to do it all.

Control your clutter and get organized.  You don’t have to be overwhelmed.  If you control it you can herd you cats.

Thanks Pamela

Are you suffering from CHAOS? Can’t have anyone over Syndrome.

chaos-dining-room-table-227972_1920

Is it because you can’t find you dining room table? You know there is one under there but it currently is covered with mail, school art projects, work, magazines and well just clutter.

Maybe it’s because your living room resembles a toy store or a that the mail room exploded? It’s been so long since you saw the floor that you don’t remember if there is an area rug down there?

junk-mail-taking-over-living-room-14441424059_860503333a_b

Are your in-laws coming for the holidays and you don’t have a room for them to stay in or maybe you do have a guest room but the bed is buried under laundry?  You can be organized and you can contain your clutter.

guestroom-not-ready-417062631_b9312e15d4

I have discussed laundry before. If you want to review it here is the link.  Air your dirty laundry here….

Basically, I suggest you fold and hang your clothing as you remove it from the drier. That way you are not temped to toss it on the bed, couch or dryer, but you will put it where it belongs. Added bonus. Your clothes will not be as wrinkled if you immediately hang them up. Yet another time saver, you’re welcome!

If this sounds or looks like your home and you feel overwhelmed by your clutter don’t give up,  it can be fixed.  You can bee organized.

Let’s start with some organizing tips for public spaces in your home.

If you have toys that have invaded your living room, think about an ottoman that has storage. You can also  utilize storage cubes, decorative boxes and baskets to contain the toys, if you insist on having them there. I recommend you limit the number of toys allowed in the living room.

A better solution is to have your children return their toys to their room or their playroom when they are finished playing with them. I try this with the dogs, but they don’t mind very well. I did have a dog who when we said it was time to go to bed she picked up her toys and carried them one at a time in her mouth and dropping them in a basket in her room. When she was done she would get into her bed. So smart. The ones we now share our home with are really cute. But they can’t seem to get with the program ……LOL.

dsc01826_1024

Another great way to keep your public spaces company ready is to use “Crap baskets” or buckets. A “Crap basket” is where you have a basket for each member of the family and if you see their stuff a/k/a, “crap” out of place you toss it into the “crap basket” they can then take their basket to their room and put it in they proper place. A Mom that I worked with decided that if she had to put stuff in the “crap basket” more than two times the stuff in the basket was not important to that family member and so they lost it temporarily. If it landed back in the “crap basket” a third time it was donated to another family. I think it was very effective way to get the family in the habit of putting their stuff where it belongs.

Let me know how you conquered your CHAOS and did you take back your public spaces in your house. Just in time for the holidays.

Do you think a Crap basket would work at your house?  Are you suffering from CHAOS?

Thanks Pamela

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day

Does your computer’s desktop look like this?

cluttered-computer-desktop-8703259974_86aeea1972_b

Yes,  No, Maybe a little….

You know that is not the best way to store your files right?

Did you know you have less security when you store your files on the desktop?

How about they may not get backed up? Many programs are designed to ignore the desktop. OUCH!! Also, in the event of a crash a restore program may not include those files on the desktop. Double Ouch!!

Oh by the way did you know that storing files on your desktop could actually slow down your computer?

Last but not least it is clutter. If you have a cluttered virtual desktop you may find it is not so easy to find what you need. Because there is too much stuff like Zip file, photos and other downloads.  Just like a cluttered physical desktop.  The more stuff you have to look at, browse, open or just move the longer it takes to find what you need.  It’s easy to find that adorable kitten video  or resume if that is the only thing on your desk.  But if it is on the bottom of all that other stuff………Clutter, disorganization and feeling overwhelmed! How embarrassing would it be to confuse the kitten video for the resume if you expect to be considered for the job.

messy-desk-clean-me

No fear.

National Clean your virtual desktop day is upon us.

Perfect time to get organized!

Move those files. Create folders and then sub folders within your folders.

Example of possible folders and sub folders

  • Bee Organized with Pamela
    •  Schedule (excel spread sheet
    •  Photos
    • Articles
      • 2016 – published
    • Work in progress
      •  October
      •  November
      •  December
      •   2017
    •  Possible ideas for future article
    • back up
    •  Expenses

What ever you need to easily find your files, music, photo or the such is what you set up. I know it is so easy to save to the desktop but once you get the folders and you are organized it is super easy to save it there. Bonus you don’t have to search for your photo’s because they are all in your photo folder.

Create shortcuts if you need to on your desktop or create a virtual cheat sheet.

You can do it. Think of all the time you will save.

I love your comments and share with friends. They will thank you!

Like every new mom needs a plant to kill…..

My sister is pregnant we will be welcoming the newest member of the hive very soon.   She moved almost 1000 miles away from home and I am 2000 miles away from her. She has made me aware of some of the crazy things new parents have to think about when you don’t have family around.

house plant photo-1447126343916-cf2ad9676ede.jpg

According to sis, don’t send a new mom a plant. She has just brought home a new addition that is totally helpless and dependent upon her. She needs to focus on keeping the newborn fed, burped, diapered and hope that she can sneak in a shower. That plant is going to die a slow painful death.

What she does need is to for you offer to run a few errands. If you are dropping off meal call to see if she might need toilet paper, soap, dog food or kitty litter. Before you head over, call her again. Her post baby brain may have now thought of something she forgot. (I can’t tell you how many times I have talked to her when she is running to the store for dog food or kitty litter.)newborn-photo-1473353027969-37b3c6ddc1f9

She also would really appreciate if you would come over and spend some time so she can take a shower and a nap would be so wonderful. Of course she is not sleeping so you don’t even have to ask.

If you folded laundry or did a load of laundry you would be the most amazing person on her list.

This will be baby number 2 so while she has some experience with kids don’t assume she knows it all. She still needs help. Assume this delivery was not any easier just because she has done it before.

Baby No 1 will also require a little extra attention. If you have kids same age, she would be for grateful if  you could take him on a play dates to the park or just a trip around the block on their bikes. Give him something to entertained him and fill his time for he doesn’t feel so deserted.dog-and-kid-photo-1467321309980-a57856cd25f7

She says if you are her best friend you might want to consider cleaning out the litter box, because they are “struggling”.  LOL

But If you say anything about her weight she will block you.

Don’t forget about her after two weeks. That is when everyone else will stop coming by. But that is when she will really need you.

Of course if you live in another state you can send her a gift certificate for a cleaning service or food delivery.

Not that she knows it all but I’m just saying she actually has some good ideas here.  She is of course my sister.

So what did you need when you were a new mom?

Thanks Pamela

Tips to organized your electronic photos

Smile!  Selfie!  Group Shot! Candid Shot! Look over here!!

selfie -photo-1461669802687-84a1aee43a29.jpgOK now that most of us are living in the digital age we have a camera on our phone and our tablets. Plus many of us have digital cameras. We take lots of pictures. We shoot selfies, our kids, our pets, our food, our flowers, our toes and lots of other things.A photo by Toronto Eaters. unsplash.com/photos/i_xVfNtQjwI

I take photos of my grocery lists, of books I want to read, of business cards I want to keep, I snap screen shots of directions, email information and other tidbits that I want to explore further.

Life is too short to keep bad pictures! But no one wants to lose his or her memories.

We have memory sticks; chips, memory cards, DVDs, old cell phones and some of us have negatives.cell phone photo photo-1454473332662-09275b52e5a1

But did you know that electronic photos can and do create clutter?

How many bad photos do you have? How about duplicates? There is really no reason to keep unrecognizable overexposed or underexposed blurry pictures or unintentional photos of your hand or the floor.

Have you organized them? Most people don’t they leave them where they took them. Cell phone or digital camera. You share them on Facebook, Instagram or by email. But that is also how they can be lost. What should you save? How to organize them? Where are they?

The first thing you have to do is find them. Go through all those old devices and see what you want to keep. Then you will need to decide how and where you want to keep your photos. There are lots of articles and tips on this that can be found all over the Internet.

Electronic photos are fairly easy to organize. You can set up folders and then you can further organize them by subject. Thank goodness electronic photos are dated. So automatically they are by date. It is easy to start with a folder per year. Then you can organize them by event. You may want to be specific if you are setting up a folder for holidays who knows what holidays are in there.

For even more specific tips on how to organized your digital photos I have attached a link from techlicious com 10 tips to keep your digital photos organized

coffee photo-1444418776041-9c7e33cc5a9c

I recently read that it is highly likely that most photographed generation will be the one who don’t have a photograph in 10 years. What do you think?

Thanks Pamela
