Do you have a Tiny fleet of exotic toddler cars but no toddler?

Happy Fall Y’all!   Since the weather is changing we are going to review somegarage issues and tips. Now is a great time to evaluate your children’s toys. Do they have lots of outdoor toys that they just did not play with this past summer? Do you have a toddler-sized fleet of power ride on toys? Maybe a Barbie Jeep, a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe and a Peg Perego John Deere Gator in your garage and your Mommy Mobile has to sit out side?

What is wrong with this picture?

How about if your garage has enough scooters, bikes, wagons and skates to outfit the entire street and your kids are not interested in any of them.barbie-jeep

I get that it might be nice for you to say you have a Corvette, an Escalade, a Jeep, a Gator, motorcycle and scooter in your garage but seriously.  Winter is coming and wouldn’t you rather have your car in the garage so you don’t have to ice off of scrape your windshield?   Just saying.

Look I know how cute her 12” huffy Disney bike is but really she is now 14. When did she last hop in the Barbie Jeep and take it for a cruise? If you need a garage for your kid’s ride on toys and your kid doesn’t ride them you need to let them go. Think sell them or donate them. They are worth some money. Sell them and use that money towards something they will use and play with.

While we are on the subject of toys, which have been outgrown, lets talk about your yard. Are you still hanging on to the sand box or the pink peppermint patty playhouse? Your baby is a boy. He’s 13 there is no way he will be playing in the sand box no matter what you bribe him with. Besides it might now be a kitty litter box. Is that what you really want in your yard? Do you have a trampoline in the back yard that is so worn out it should be declared a hazard zone? Get rid of that accident and lawsuit waiting to happen. There is no reason to keep all the outdoor oversized toys your children have outgrown. Unless you are running a daycare your yard should not look like a toddler used car lot. Embrace change! Let go of clutter.

Is Frankenstein in your house?

I know you are thinking where the heck is she going with this?  Halloween?  Movie time?  Stay with me.

So do you have a bookcase made from cement blocks and wood planks?

How about a chair that you are using a book as a chair leg?

Does your grill cover have more duct tape showing than original fabric?

Are you using duct tape on an outlet that you need to have repaired? Dangerous!

How about zip ties? Are you using them to hold your hair dryer together?

How about Safety pins? Are you using them on your underwear or Slip? Or tape on your Bra’s underwire? OUCH! You deserve better.

These are Frankenstein projects. Bits and pieces from here and there.

The bigger Frankenstein can be clutter and disorganization.  Like the monster, it can become out of control.  It can be so stressful trying to control the monster.  It can take on a life of its own – Taking over your life by controlling your home.  Time to take control of your Frankenstein.

Where does your monster lurk?  By the front door?  Shoes, bags, keys or the dog’s leash?  Maybe the monster is in your bathroom?  Hiding in the potions, lotions and torture devices you use on your hair and lashes?

Or is your monster creeping around your kitchen?  Hiding your lid and Tupperware from you?  Stashing your to go mug lids where you can’t find them…

So if you have monsters in your closet..kid’s room or the playroom.  You have to get the monster out of their room.  No child wants a monster in their room.

Being that Halloween is near, I challenge you to take control of your very own Frankenstein.

Clear out the clutter!  Take that monster to the trash, donate it to a new zoo, or sell that freak show.  Cash in on your clutter.  You can be organized.  Think of all the time you will save and wouldn’t you rather be enjoying time with our family and friends than searching for your shoe the monster took under the bed.

What is your Frankenstein project?

Thanks!  Pamela

Landing zones

Do you have landing zones in your home?

I know I do.

Where are the trouble spots for clutter?  Those are landing zones. I suggest you pay careful attention to the landing zones in your home.   Let’s map them out.

Once We Identify Them We Can Work On correcting The Problems.

Now lets deal with your stacks.

In many houses there are stacks of stuff that accumulate in certain areas.

Do you have stacks of stuff on the dining table? Do you have to unearth your washer to do the laundry? You know there is a desk under there but you haven’t seen the top of it since you don’t know when?

You are not alone. To solve this problem we have to determine what is the root cause of the problem.

The why, Where and What if?

  • Where do your stacks start?
  • Why does that particular spot that attract stacks of stuff?
  • What if we changed that spot by making it easy to put stuff away or out of sight?

Let’s look at why things stack up where they do.

We had a problem at one house because the kitchen was connected to the garage and the kitchen table was right there. That table was our where as it was Perfect landing spot for mail, jackets, keys and work stuff..

Why did that happen? Because it was the first flat surface when we walked thru the door everyday. ARGH!!

Our what if was solved by placing an antique dresser with lots of drawers in the kitchen area. We had a drawer for mail. A drawer for work papers and folders, one was perfect for keys and Mr. Man’s wallet. We added a charger station in one and that is where all the electronics went. Our stacks when in a drawer and were out of sight but easy to access every morning. It was perfect and we still had drawers for kitchen linens.

Also, in our office we strategically placed a trashcan and a shredder. I always knew where the mail was and when I was ready to deal with it. I pulled it mail out of the dresser drawer and dealt with it. Sensitive stuff was shredded immediately; trash and junk mail was easy to dispose of. We added file folders so that when those things came in we needed to keep there was a place to file them away immediately. By having a folder ready I had no excuse not to file it. I kept supplies in the file drawer so when I needed to add a folder it was easy.

The secret to not having piles around is to find out why they happen. Then fix it. Make it easy to deal with those piles and they will not stack up on you.

  1. 🙂 Were you talking to me?
My, oh, my, this sounds just like me. Just like us.
Our table is FULL of stacks. The only problem is: WHERE do I put a cabinet in which I can put all the stuff into. That’s the problem we’ve had ever since we moved into this place.
One of these days we’ll find a solution.
    Great post!
Have a very HAPPY week 🙂

    1. Can you hang something on the wall? Possible to remove the table? Swap a room? Since your table is full of stacks does that mean you don’t use the table? I did a sitting area in the “Breakfast nook” for a client instead of a table and chairs.

      1. 🙂 Thanks for your help, but neither is possible. We could only put a cupboard or some sort of treasure chest in another room. And then you know what will happen: everything will go back on the table 😀

  2. I am good about piles in the main part of the house (but not perfect) – it’s my office where they start to accumulate. And it really is an issue of not having a particular place for things. I’m going to do a little work on this, this afternoon, so hopefully it will make a difference!

  3. Our coffee table is landing zone for all the mail, since it’s two feet from the front door. There are probably junk mail coupons buried into the stack of papers on that table from a year ago! But after reading your article “Are You Facing a Paper Avalanche,” me and that coffee table are gonna have a nice little paper-shredding party tonight.
