Another way to look at toy storage

It’s amazing that, for such small people, kids need so much stuff. Actually, *need* may not be the right word. When they were babies, sure, they needed all kinds of gear and specialty items like soothers and sippy cups and…

Homework! Making it Easier for All

Create a homework box!

Now that back to school supplies are everywhere. It’s the perfect time to pick up and create a homework box. It could be a tote, box, basket, or crate. The purpose is to have everything your kids need to do their homework all in one spot.

Add things like pencils, a pencil sharpener, erasers, crayons or colored pencils, markers, calculator, index cards, tape, ruler, paper, highlighter and post it notes. You might even add a timer. Your kids will have everything they need, will not spend time looking for and putting off doing their homework.Aaron Burden photo- crayon 1453749024858-4bca89bd9edc

While you are at it you might as well set up an after school snack zone. Fill it with Mom approved snacks your kids can grab when they get home and are starving.

A shoe organizer with pockets is a great way to set up a snack zone. You can hang it on the back of your pantry door. By placing Mom approved snacks in the zone your child can reach. Older kids snacks can be placed in the higher pockets.

Next have a discussion with your children about homework expectations.

  • When they are to do homework? Do they get a certain amount of playtime are there scheduled breaks. This is where the timer will come in handy. You know how long you kid can work before they need to blow off some energy.
  • Snack before starting homework or after? If you are giving them a sugar snack you know they are most likely going to need to burn off the sugar energy. When did they have lunch? My husband is a little bit crabby when he is hungry and he is a little bit hungry all the time. ❤ So, I always have snacks and you know a hungry person can be a cranky person.
  • Where are they to do their homework? Chose a place with minimal distractions. (Like TV and toys.)
  • Where is the homework box kept? Remind them that if they use the last of anything to let you know so it can be replaced. Don’t forget when you open the last package is a great time to add it to the running shopping list.
  • After the homework is completed where should your child put it for Mom or Dad to check it? I’m going to suggest you have them put it in a folder in their backpack. Once you have checked their homework they can return their backpack to the designated spot you have near the door.

If you would like to have a homework routine checklist

Chore Chart = Less Nagging

a whimsical life has a great one. A Whimsical Life Homework Routine  Remember if your children know what is expected and they know they have a checklist there should be less nagging.

So are you excited that the kids are going back to school or are you sad?

Have a great day!

National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

I am amazed at all the national days.  But for anyone who has ever grown a garden and grown zucchini you know by now you are overrun with the fruits of your labor.  caroline-attwood-301748.jpg

You have made fried zucchini, zucchini bread, zucchini pie (it’s a lot like pumpkin), zucchini lasagna, pasta,  fritters, stuffed zucchini, and just about anything else you can think of and yet the zucchini keeps on producing…..  Now you know why this day was created.

How about on August the 8 which is national sneak some zucchini onto your neighbor’s porch day… you also help your neighbor out.  Introduce yourself if you don’t already know your neighbors.  If you do give them a call.  Just being friendly is an easy thing to do and you will be the one to reap the rewards.  Not just the fact that you can get some zucchini to a new home,brooke-cagle-32431.jpg

Here is a recipe  Roasted Zucchini and Red Potatoes

Have a great day and enjoy some zucchini.

Do you have a zucchini recipe you want to share?

Go M.A.D. (Make A Difference)

I think we should all go M.A.D.

The Chicken Grandma

IMG_4099 Burning off the HazeYour loving kindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.  Psalm 36:5

In a world that seems to be swirling with fighting, violence, hatred and evil; there is something calming about a quiet morning. A morning that steals in subtlety with a hazy fog and the subdued voices of the wild birds is, to me, a blessing.

After being deluged by negative news stories of events happening in our world; I was treated to the gift of one of those wonderful quiet mornings. My husband and I sat on the porch and just soaked it in.

IMG_4098 Quiet of the Morning Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. James 4:14

There is something elemental…something so basic about a quiet morning filled with fog. There is a hush…
